Maalik  Review:

Director Pulkit’s film is an outdated gangster drama that suffers from dull storytelling and a convoluted screenplay. Written by Jyotsana Nath and Pulkit, the narrative offers little insight into Deepak’s rise in the world of crime—apart from an unconvincing origin story where his helpless father is beaten by a powerful boss, prompting Deepak to take up crime and assume the name Maalik. There’s no substantial plot beyond one gangbanger or the other trying to bring him down. This includes MLA Balhar (Swanand Kirkire), who ropes in a suspended SP from Kolkata, Prabhu Das (Prosenjit Chatterjee), to arrest Maalik. His mentor, Shankar Singh (Saurabh Shukla), and rival, Chandrashekhar (Saurabh Sachdeva), also turn against him. The film simply drags on as each tries to eliminate him, and he defeats them one by one. As the viewer begins to lose track of who’s chasing him and when, the plot devolves into relentless shootouts that quickly become tedious. The narrative briefly gains momentum in the second half, and some of the action sequences are shot with finesse, especially the climax.Although the lack of a compelling plotline makes the viewing experience cumbersome, the film maintains an even pace. A major betrayal toward the end, however, renders the story trite. Anuj Rakesh Dhawan’s cinematography and Ketan Sodha’s background score lend some polish to the overall narrative.Rajkummar Rao delivers a strong performance. He strikes a balance between being a dreaded gangster and a caring family man. Even in a brief role, Prosenjit Chatterjee delivers a fine act as the SP determined to bring Maalik down. Manushi Chhillar has limited screen time but is decent as Maalik’s wife. Anshumaan Pushkar is also effective as Maalik’s college friend turned trusted aide. The other supporting cast—Saurabh Shukla, Swanand Kirkire, and Saurabh Sachdeva—lend able support.Maalik is an uninspired and clichéd gangster drama that offers little novelty and can be skipped.

Daaku Maharaaj Review:

Daaku Maharaaj arrived on Netflix last month, which was too early compared to the release schedule of other films on any OTT platform. It was expected to start trending on the platform due to its genre and Nandamuri Balakrishna playing the lead role. However, the situation has been different since it is still far away from breaking the viewership records made by Lucky Baskhar.

Notably, Daaku Maharaaj accumulated 2.4 million views when it first premiered and the number witnessed a minor rise in the second week to 2.6 million. Despite the low numbers, the film has still managed to grab a position among the top ten non-English films on Netflix that premiered by the beginning of this month. Although it could not beat Lucky Baskhar, Daaku Maharaaj was able to beat Yami Gautam and Pratik Gandhi’s Dhoom Dhaam, since the latter had recorded only 2.5 million views.

On the other hand, Daaku Maharaaj is still trending at the first spot in more than three countries. Lucky Baskhar has maintained a very big number with 11.70 million views. Daaku Maharaaj’s viewership in two weeks is surprisingly higher than Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram, which has recorded 4.9 million views. It has also taken over the records made by Hi Nanna, Indian 2, Devara, Salaar, Rifle Club, Amaran, Savi, and Saripodhaa Sanivaaram.

Considering that NBK’s film has recorded a decent number in terms of viewership, it remains to be seen if Akhanda 2’s streaming rights will be taken by Netflix and if that happens, the viewership numbers might match the ones made by Lucky Baskhar or surpass it in some way.

When a city is terrorized by a sadistic serial killer, a seasoned detective and a newly recruited paramedic are forced into a deadly game of vengeance, only to discover the key to stopping the bloodshed lies in unlocking the truth of their own haunted pasts.

Vindicta  Review:

Starring Elena Kampouris, Sean Astin and Jeremy Piven
Directed by Sean McNamara
Written by Ian Neligh
Paramount/Republic Pictures

At a couple of points in VINDICTA, we’re given glimpses of a movie-theater marquee that, if you fill in the missing letters, reads “SLAPSTICK OF ANOTHER KIND WITH JERRY LEWIS.” Why Steven Paul, who wrote, produced and directed SLAPSTICK and produced and came up with the story for the new film, would want to namecheck that notorious debacle is anybody’s guess. It’s also asking a lot to expect us to believe that any theater anywhere would actually show it, but then Seattle has bigger problems in VINDICTA. Violent protests against local government and authority are escalating, and amidst all the looting and arson, a mysterious madman has begun a gruesome killing spree.

Seattle also has the problem of being played by Vancouver and, in a number of scenes, a very obvious backlot. And VINDICTA has the problem of being the 704th knockoff of SE7EN, with a pinch of SAW here, a dash of HALLOWEEN there, a couple of scoops of THE PURGE and a villain who, with his Michelangelo’s David mask, is visually reminiscent of the Cherub from 2001’s VALENTINE.

Why does he wear the visage of the David? Well, it ties in with his m.o. of leaving Latin words scrawled in blood at the sites of his crimes. And since we learn early on that VINDICTA’s hero, trainee paramedic Lucy “Call me Lou” O’Connor (Elena Kampouris), once did her thesis on Latin at college, it quickly becomes clear that she’s an unwitting but central part of the murderer’s twisted and complicated game. Not long after that, it becomes clear that VINDICTA is one of those thrillers that depends on the characters doing exactly what the bad guy predicts and expects they will do, in order to further both his and the movie’s plot.

And as in many films of this type, it’s not enough that Lou becomes embroiled in a horrific slaughter spree; she’s also got a dead mother in her past, and a chief (Sean Astin) back at the stationhouse who failed her at the academy. There are a lot of other things in VINDICTA that will seem familiar even to audience members with just a passing familiarity with this genre: There is a cat scare in the opening setpiece. There is a scene in which the killer peeps at Lou while she’s showering. There is a lair full of candles, mannequins and photos of the characters posted on the walls. The people who venture into this lair, by the way, keep talking about how the place is locked and barricaded and there’s no way out, but others keep finding their way in.

A good deal of VINDICTA is just as contrived, particularly as it gets into its final act, and the movie in general wobbles uncertainly between its multiple-murder scenario and being a heroine-trying-to-prove-herself drama. Not to mention that the whole populace-in-revolt element remains gratuitous and unconnected in any meaningful way to the main story throughout. The villain’s motivation becomes obvious by the half-hour point, yet the more the movie tries to explain its plot, the more ridiculous it becomes, climaxing with a protracted chase-and-fight of the type we’ve seen dozens (hundreds?) of times before.

Director Sean McNamara, segueing to horror territory following the likes of SOUL SURFER and more direct-to-video BABY GENIUSES sequels than I ever knew existed, manages a stylish flourish here and there, but might have better served the material by leaning in harder on its sillier elements and turning it into a campfest. For her part, Kampouris–an up-and-coming actress who deserves better starring vehicles than this and the most recent CHILDREN OF THE CORN–plays with as much conviction as possible under the circumstances, but is hard-pressed to make very much of her generically conceived role. And there’s no way she, or any actor, should be expected to sell what is easily one of the dumbest closing lines in recent movie history.

"Bau, Artist at War" is the extraordinary true story of Joseph Bau, a man who defied the darkness of the Holocaust with art, humor, and an unbreakable spirit. A gifted artist and master forger, Joseph risked his life to save others, using his talent to create false documents that helped fellow prisoners escape certain death. But in the depths of despair, he discovered something even more powerful...love. In the Plaszow concentration camp, amid relentless brutality, Joseph met Rebecca - a woman whose courage matched his own. Their secret wedding, held in the very heart of hell itself, was a defiant act of love in the face of unimaginable horror - an event later immortalized in Schindler's List. Years later, when Joseph is called to testify against the sadistic Nazi officer who tormented him, he is forced to relive the horrors of his past. But through it all, he draws strength from the love that saved him, the art that sustained him, and the unyielding will that kept him alive. A gripping war drama, a daring espionage thriller, and one of the greatest love stories of our time, "Bau, Artist at War" is a testament to the power of resilience, the triumph of the human spirit, and the unbreakable bonds that even war could not destroy.

Bau, Artist at War Review:

Dr. Laura Wilhelm of LauraWil Intercultural offers her early review of Sean McNamara’s powerful historical drama Bau, Artist at War, starring Emile Hirsch (Into The Wild, Milk, Lone Survivor, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Inbar Lavi (Lucifer, Imposters).  The film will have its world theatrical premiere on September 26, 2025, and is distributed by ShowBiz Direct and Republic Pictures.

To the vast array of gripping Holocaust dramas such as Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List and Joathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, we can now add Sean McNamara’s Bau, Artist at War, starring Emile Hirsch and Inbar Lavi.  The tragically true story features the suspenseful wartime experiences of Joseph Bau, whose talents for forgery saved hundreds of lives that could so easily have been lost in Adolf Hitler’s infernal concentration camps.

The Polish-born Bau, who resembled none other than Albert Einstein, was in fact one of the famous ”Schindler Jews” who defied death or capture in a Czech munitions factory under Oskar Schindler’s supervision.  He immigrated to Israel after World War II and finally managed to put himself on the world map as a talented artist.

Bau (Hirsch) is sustained through the atrocities of camp life by his love for Rebecca Tennenbaum (Lavi).  Their illicit wedding in the Płaszów concentration camp is movingly portrayed in Schindler’s List, as well as Bau, Artist at War.   The real Joseph and Rebecca appear in Schindler’s renowned epilogue, placing rocks on Oskar Schindler’s grave along with their fellow factory survivors.

The elegant cinematography, stark palettes, and haunting score give Bau, Artist at War an elegiac feel that helps to offset the horrors it depicts.  There is always room on the screens of the world for another eloquent Holocaust testimonial.  Humankind owes the victims at least that much.
